You just had your dental implant placed, now what?
If you’re feeling a mix of excitement, relief, and maybe a little nervousness about the healing process, you’re not alone. Dental implant aftercare is a crucial part of your journey toward a stronger, more confident smile.
At Montana Center for Implants and Dentures here in Billings, we walk every patient through this stage carefully because we know it’s just as important as the procedure itself. So let’s talk about what dental implant aftercare really looks like.
1. Take It Easy (Yes, Seriously)
In the first 24 to 48 hours after your procedure, your only job is to rest. No heavy lifting, no running errands, and definitely no intense workouts. Your body needs time to start the healing process, and pushing yourself too hard can slow it down.
Think soft blankets, ice packs, and maybe your favorite show on the couch. Trust us, it’s the one time we insist you do nothing.
2. Manage Swelling and Discomfort
Some swelling and soreness are completely normal. Ice packs on your cheek can help reduce inflammation during the first 24 hours. Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used as directed, and we’ll make sure you leave our office with the right instructions for managing any discomfort.
If pain increases or feels sharp after the first couple of days, give us a call. It’s always better to check in.
3. Stick to Soft Foods (And Skip the Straw)
Dental implant aftercare starts in your kitchen. Avoid anything crunchy, sticky, or spicy for at least a week. Soft, nutrient-rich foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies (eaten with a spoon, not a straw), and scrambled eggs are your best friends right now.
Straws? They’re a no-go. The suction can dislodge the blood clot that forms as your body begins to heal.
4. Keep Your Mouth Clean (But Gently)
We get it, you don’t want to mess anything up. But keeping your mouth clean is vital to prevent infection. Rinse with warm salt water (gently) starting the day after your procedure, especially after meals.
Skip the electric toothbrush and mouthwash for a few days. When you do brush, be super gentle around the surgical site.
5. Know What’s Normal (And What’s Not)
A little bleeding? Normal. Mild swelling and bruising? Also normal. A fever, persistent bleeding, or intense pain? Not normal.
If something feels off, call us. We’d much rather talk through a false alarm than have you tough it out and risk complications.
6. Follow Every Instruction We Give You
Yes, every single one. That little post-op guide we give you after surgery is tailored to your specific procedure and healing needs. We know the temptation to Google things (we all do it), but nothing replaces personal instructions from your implant expert.
Dr. Muir and Dr. Townsend take pride in not only placing implants with precision but supporting every patient through healing and beyond.
7. Come to Your Follow-Up Appointments
This one’s big. Follow-ups help us monitor healing and catch any issues early. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions, show us how things are feeling, and make sure everything’s on track.
If you skip this part, you’re basically flying without a copilot.
